"बाबू आज तुम्हारा एक अलग रूप देखने को मिल रहा है। तुम एकदम अलग हो!"

मेरा नाम प्रिया है और मैं एक edu-लीडर के रूप में कस्तूरबा गांधी बालिका विद्यालय की बच्चियों के साथ उनकी शिक्षा पर कार्य करती हूँ| मार्च  माह से लॉकडाउन के कारण विद्यालय बंद हैं| ऐसे में पिछड़े इलाकों के बच्चों की शिक्षा बहुत प्रभावित हुई है| आई-सक्षम के edu-leaders जहाँ पहले अपने गाँव के सरकारी विद्यालयों में जा कर दो से ढाई घंटा बच्चों को पढ़ाया करते थे, आज फ़ोन के माध्यम से बच्चों तक पहुँच रहे हैं| परन्तु गाँव में आज भी हर परिवार के पास फ़ोन की सुविधा नहीं है| ऐसे में बच्चियों के साथ मिल कर सीखने-सीखाने का हमारा प्रयास दिल को छू जाने वाले रहा|

लॉक डाउन होने के कारण सभी edu-leaders बच्चों को घर से फ़ोन पर पढ़ा रहे थे| इसी बीच हमारे मन में एक विचार आया कि क्यों न कस्तूरबा की बच्चियों को भी फ़ोन के माध्यम से पढाया जाए जिससे वे कुछ नया और अधिक सीख पाएं?  तभी एक दिन टीम में बात हुई और हमने सुझाव दिया कि कस्तूरबा में जाने वाली edu-leaders भी बच्चों को फ़ोन के माध्यम से पढ़ा सकती हैं| सभी लोगों ने थोड़ा सोचा और हाँ बोल दिया। उसके अगले ही दिन हम सभी ने मिलकर बच्चों के नंबर ढूंढ़ निकाले और बच्चों के माता- पिता से बात की। हमने उन्हें बताया कि हम लोग बच्चों को फोन द्वारा पढ़ाना चाहते हैं, आपकी क्या राय है आप भी बताएं । सभी के माता- पिता भी मान गए और हमने 4 दिन के अंदर ही क्लास शुरू कर दी। सब बहुत जल्दी - जल्दी हो रहा था। हर रोज़ प्लान बनाना फिर उसी प्लान से बच्चियों को पढ़ाना । शुरुआत में हम केवल 8 ही बच्चों से जुड़ पाए थे लेकिन जब लगातार कॉल करते रहे और सेशन चलते रहे तो हमसे और भी बच्चे जुड़ने लगे| हमे मालूम ही नहीं चला कि कब बच्चों की संख्या इतनी बढ़ गयी|  अच्छी बात ये रही कि कक्षा 7 में 30 बच्चियां हैं और हम लोग 20 बच्चियों तक पहुंच पाए। 

सप्ताह में पूरे 5 दिन सेशन होते हैं । बच्चों को कॉल करने का समय 10 बजे है । अगर किसी दिन 10 बजे कॉल नहीं कर पाते हैं तोबच्चियां खुद कॉल कर लेती हैं और कॉल उठाते ही सवालों की एक रेल सी शुरू हो जाती है| दीदी 10 बज गए आपने कॉल क्यो नहीं किया ? क्या आपकी तबीयत खराब है? क्या आज कॉल नहीं होगा? और ना जाने कितने ऐसे सवाल| बात तो बहुत छोटी सी है पर बहुत बड़ी खुशी देती है कि बच्चियों में सीखने की कितनी उत्सुकता है| यही उत्सुकता हमारे धैर्य व् प्रोत्साहन को बनाए रखती है।

 कॉल के ज़रिए पढ़ाने से एक ऐसा काम भी हो पाया जो हमे कक्षा में पढ़ाते हुए असंभव सा लगता था। आज वो बच्चियां भी कॉल करती हैं और पढ़ने के लिए उत्सुक हैं, जो पहले क्लास में रहना पसंद नहीं करती थी| जब उन्हें गृहकार्य मिलता है तो वो उसको पूरा कर के भेजती  हैं, पर उनके गृहकार्य पूरा करने के बाद व्हाट्सएप से उसे भेजने की कहानी बहुत मजेदार होती है । हर बच्ची की एक छोटी- सी कहानी होती है, सब एक दूसरे को अपनी कहानी सुनाती हैं कि उन्होंने आज का होमवर्क कैसे भेजा था। कभी - कभी कुछ दिक्कतें भी होती हैं क्योंकि हर बच्ची के घर पर फ़ोन नहीं है| इसके बावजूद सब  एक दूसरे  के घर जा कर पढ़ती हैं, social distancing और साफ़ सफाई का ध्यान रखती हैं| बच्चियों के एक दुसरे को सहयोग कर साथ में सीखने के इस कदम ने हमे ऐसे समय में भी अनेकों घरों तक पहुँचा दिया| अब हम सिर्फ 8 बच्चियों को कॉल करते हैं जिससे 19-20 बच्चियों से जुड़ पाते हैं। मुझे लगता था कि कॉल पर पढ़ने से बच्चियों के पढ़ाई के स्तर को कैसे जांच पाऊंगी पर शायद वह भी खुद ब खुद आसान हो गया| 

कुछ बदलाव मेरे घर में भी हुए , मैं पढ़ाती थी ये तो मेरे घर में सभी जानते है पर मैं कैसे पढ़ाती हूँ यह आज सब को पता चल पाया| मेरे पापा भी शिक्षक हैं| पर जब आज इन बच्चों को कॉल पर पढ़ाती हूँ तो पापा बैठ कर सुनते रहते है कि मैं क्या बोलती हूँ और कैसे बोलती हूँ । एक दिन पापा ने मुझे बोला कि - “बाबू आज तुम्हारा एक अलग रूप देखने को मिल रहा है । तुम एक दम अलग हो|”  मुझे यह सुन कर पहले तो थोड़ा दुख हुआ कि मैं पिछले 3-4 सालों से पढ़ा रही हूँ और मेरे पापा अब ध्यान दे रहे हैं, परन्तु इस सबसे ज्यादा इस बात की खुशी हुई कि वो मेरे पढ़ाने के निर्णय व् तरीके पर गर्व कर रहे थे। 

In our previous blog post, we shared how one of our ex-intern from Yale School of Management shared about her experience with i-Saksham. Here is another post capturing one such experience story of a visitor "Vineet Sabharwal" who works at McKinsey and visited i-Saksham a few years ago.

"Meeting the i-Saksham family a couple of years ago was a surreal experience for me. I had heard a lot about the commitment and passion with which the team had been working tirelessly to create a system of education that was still alien to large parts of the country. 

However, seeing them in action on their Karma Bhoomi was inspirational beyond imagination. They had penetrated the hearts and minds of the local communities in creating and delivering innovative classroom experiences for young students in areas where finding a functional school building was more difficult than finding high-speed internet. Whether it was language or mathematics, the engagement in the classroom was meticulously planned and delivered effectively with the help of technology by young local volunteers who had been trained well by the i-Saksham team. And the result was clearly evident in the eyes of young students, eager to participate at each step of the learning process. It was truly heartwarming and reassuring to know that the future of these kids was in the right hands. Meeting the i-Saksham family a couple of years ago continues to inspire me to support the team in every possible way."

Vicki (Ex- Yale Intern) shares about her experience with i-Saksham!

Since the founding of i-Saksham, we have hosted interns, volunteers, researchers etc. both nationally and internationally. It includes interns and guests from Yale, Teach for India, Christ University, America India Foundation etc. Where witnessing the education of children in interior pockets of India adds knowledge to them; the experience also becomes one of its kind for them after being exposed to the rural realities and interactions. Here is a testimonial from one such intern, Vicki who joined us from Yale School of Management in the year 2017

"I was immensely touched by the work that i-Saksham does, and it is directly linked to my fascination with whether curiosity is born from knowledge, the opposite, or a bit of both.  i-Saksham renders this conundrum irrelevant, in that it teaches young adults to introduce grade 1 to 5 children to Hindi, English & math, which unleashes the potential of both these phenomena.  

As a younger sister of a brother 2 years my senior, I convinced my dad to teach me to read and write while preparing him for primary school. i-Saksham edu-leaders के अनोखे प्रयास: बच्चे न रहें शिक्षा से वंचित!

पूरे विश्व भर में जहाँ एक और कोरोना जैसी महामारी से जन-जीवन अस्त व्यस्त है, वहीँ दूसरी ओर बच्चों की पढाई भी बहुत प्रभावित हुई है| ख़ास तौर पर ग्रामीण व् पिछड़े वर्ग के बच्चों की शिक्षा तो मानो रुक सी गयी है| परन्तु कहा जाता है ना- संकट के समय ही हम अपनी क्षमताओं को जान पाते हैं! कुछ ऐसी ही क्षमताओं का उदाहरण i-सक्षम के edu-leaders ने पिछले 3 हफ़्तों में दिया है|

लॉकडाउन होने के बाद से ही बच्चों की पढाई को लेकर edu-leaders ने अनेक महत्त्वपूर्ण कदम उठाएं हैं| जहाँ एक और edu-leader प्रवीण ने बच्चों को online गणित पढाना शुरू किया वहीँ दूसरी और edu-लीडर अंशु अपने किराने की दूकान से बच्चों को अभ्यास सामग्री देती नज़र आई| इन सभी युवाओं ने अपने द्वारा लिए गये इन कदमों के बारे में साझा किया है| आईये उन्ही की लेखनी के माध्यम से उनके अद्भुत कार्यों की समझ बनाते हैं-

प्रवीण -

नमस्कार!!  मेरा नाम प्रवीण है, और मैं i-Saksham फैलोशिप के द्वातिया बैच का एक फैलो हूं । मैं आप सभी को लॉक डाउन के दौरान हमारे द्वारा चलाए जा रहे ऑनलाइन क्लास के बारे में बताना चाहता हूं कि कैसे हम मोबाइल और अभिभावकों की सहायता से बच्चों तक शिक्षा पहुंचने में सफल रहे ।

इसके लिए हम सबसे पहले सभी अभिभावकों से बात कर उनका व्हाट्सएप नंबर लिया फिर क्लास के अनुसार ग्रुप बनाएं। इन बच्चों को पढ़ाने के लिए सबसे पहले एनसीईआरटी बुक का चैप्टर वाइज पीडीएफ  व्हाट्सएप ग्रुप में शेयर कर देते हैं और  कॉन्फ्रेंस कॉल के द्वारा सभी से जुड़ जाते हैं। अब हम अपने लेशन प्लान के अनुसार पढ़ना , सुनकर लिखना इत्यादि एक्टिविटी के साथ पढ़ाने का काम करते हैं। इन सब के अतिरिक्त लेशन से जुड़े कुछ वीडियो शेयर करते हैं । यदि किसी बच्चे को कुछ ज्यादा परेशानी होती है तो उससे जुड़े वीडियो बनाकर भेज देते हैं ताकि उन्हें समझने में आसानी हो। साथ में उन्हें कुछ एप्स जैसे बोलो इत्यादि पर भी कुछ समय पढ़ने और अभ्यास करने की सलाह देते हैं। फिर आखिर में उनसे बात कर के हम यह जानने की कोशिश करते हैं कि वे कितना और क्या पढ़ पाए? और उसे पढ़कर कितना समझ  आया ?

इस दौरान हम बच्चे के अभिभावक से  आग्रह करते हैं की वे बच्चे के पास ही रहे ताकि सेशन लेने में हमें आसानी रहे और अगर बच्चे को कोई भी समस्या हो तो वे हमें बता पाएं।

अंशु -

नमस्ते! मेरा नाम अंशु है और मैं जीविका आई-सक्षम फैलोशिप की फैलो हूँ|  जैसे ही हमे लॉक डाउन के बारे में मालूम हुआ तो सबसे बड़ी चिंता यही हो रही थी कि अब बच्चों की पढाई कैसे होगी|  हमारी एक राशन की दूकान है जो सुबह 10 से शाम 4 बजे तक खुल रही है| मेरे अधिकतर छात्रों के अभिभावक हमारी ही दुकान से सामन लेते हैं| एक दिन एक बच्चा ही सामान लेने आया तो मैंने उससे पूछा कि वो आजकल क्या पढ़ रहा है, तो उसने बताया की स्कूल बंद हैं इसीलिए वे आजकल कुछ नही पढ़ रहा है। मुझे पहले थोड़ा बुरा लगा कि बच्चों की पढ़ाई रुक गई है, पर फिर कुछ समय बाद इस समस्या के हल ढूंढे का सोचा, तब मुझे एक विचार सूझा। मुझे लगा जब ये बच्चे या अभिभावक मेरी दुकान से सामान लेने आते हैं तो क्यूं न तब मैं उन्हें कुछ प्रैक्टिस शीट व् टी एल एम दे दूं, जिससे बच्चे घर पर ही अभ्यास कर सकें और उनकी पढ़ाई पे असर ना पड़े | अभी लगभग मेरे 15-20 बच्चे अपने घर पर पढ़ रहे हैं और इससे मैं बहुत ही खुश हूं।

बाल्मीकि -

मेरा नाम बाल्मीकि है। मैं i-saksham फैलोशिप में एक Edu-leader हूं। वर्तमान में चल रही समस्या के बारे में हम सभी जानते हैं। इस समस्या के चलते बच्चों की शिक्षा में बाधा आ गई है, कुछ तो अपने शिक्षण पर बिल्कुल भी ध्यान नहीं दे रहे हैं ।

मेरे मन में विचार आया कि क्यूं ना इस संकट की घड़ी में सभी साथ मिलकर सूझ - बूझ से काम लें। कुछ समय सोचने के बाद मझे कुछ सुझाव सुझे जिससे बच्चे घर बैठे आराम से पढ़ पाएं और सीखते रहें उनकी पढ़ाई में कोई बाधा ना आए, जिससे उनकी वृद्धि का स्तर ना गिरे। तो मेरे पास कुछ पहले से कुछ एल एम रखे हुए थे मैंने उन्ही के आधार पर कुछ और बनाए और अपने पास में रहने वाले सभी बच्चो को बुला कर उनको दे दिया। इन्हीं टी एल एम के माध्यम से बच्चो को उनके घर पर करने के लिए कार्य भी दे दिया और कहा कि वो दो दिन बाद आकर चेक करा लें। जब मुझे पता लगा की बच्चे अब अपने अपने घरों में बैठ कर पढ़ाई कर रहें हैं और उनके अभिभवक भी उनकी सहायता कर रहे हैं। जब दो दिन बाद बच्चे होमवर्क दिखाने आते हैं तो मैं उनको दिए गए टी एल एम को आपस में बदल देता हूं और मैं खुद से भी कुछ नए टी एल एम बना कर तैयार रखता हूं जिससे उनकी अच्छे से प्रैक्टिस हो पाए। मेरे इस प्रयास से बच्चे, उनके अभिभावक और मैं, हम सभी बेहद खुद हैं ।

तनिया -

मेरा नाम तानिया है, और मैं i-Saksham टीम की सदस्य हूँ। आज मैं आप लोगों के साथ हमारे Edu-leader साक्षी , गुलमेहर , शहनाज और किरण के एक नए प्रयास के बारे में बताना चाहती हूं। कैसे उन्होंने बच्चों को उनके  अभिभावक के सहयोग से पढ़ाने का एक नया रास्ता निकाला है जो कि काबिले तारीफ है और  उसके कुछ मुख्य अनुभव को मैं आप सभी के साथ साझा करना चाहूंगी । जैसा कि लॉक डाउन के चलते संस्था के सभी सदस्य और Edu-leader भी इस चिंता में थे कि बच्चों की पढ़ाई कैसे जारी रखी जाए। जब हम लोगों ने इस पर बातचीत की तो बहुत सोचने के बाद कई तरीके निकल के आए जिससे हम बच्चों को पढ़ा सकते थे, वो भी सरकार द्वारा नियमित सभी नियमों का पालन करते हुए । जैसे सभी ने ये बताया कि हम बच्चों को उनके अभिभवकों के सहयोग से घर बैठे ही मोबाइल के द्वारा पढ़ा सकते हैं , और इस तरह के  कई विचार सामने निकल के आए। पहले  तो हमें लगा कि ये कैसे हो पाएगा हम अभिभावकों से कैसे बात करेंगे क्या वो हमारी बात समझेंगे ? वैसे ही हमारे edu - leaders के मन में भी कई बातें आ रही थी ।  कैसे होगा दी ? कैसे बात करेंगे ? लेकिन हमारे edu - leader  ने अभिभावकों से बात की और हम जिन अभिभावकों से बात कर रहे थे ज्यादातर अभिभावक तैयार हो गए और बोला कि आप  हमारे बच्चों को किसी भी माध्यम से पढ़ा सकते  हैं और हम  सभी आपका सहयोग करेंगे ।

इसकी शुरुआत हमारी एक Edu - leader किरण ने किया। जब बच्चों को मोबाइल के माध्यम से  पढ़ाना शुरू किया तो पहले दिन सिर्फ दो ही बच्चे शामिल हो पाए और वो पालतू जानवरों के नाम सीख पाए थे । इसके ही दुसरे दिन 10 : 30 बजे  किरण के एक विद्यार्थी ने उन्हें बिल्कुल ठीक समय पर  वीडियो कॉल की तो उन्हें काफी खुशी हुई और उस दिन 12 बच्चों ने मोबाइल और उनके अभिभावक के माध्यम से पढ़ाई की। कल शहनाज़ ने इसकी शुरुआत की फिर गुलमेहर ने और आज साक्षी ने भी इसकी शुरुआत की । जब साक्षी ने अपने छात्रों को कॉल लगाई  तो एक बच्चे की मां ने कॉल उठाया और जो भी बच्चे को कार्य दिया जा रहा था और पढ़ने में दिक्कत हो रही थी, उनकी मां पूरी तरह से उनकी मदद कर रहीं थी और अंतिम में बच्चे से बात हो जाने के बाद उनकी मां से पूछा भी की आपने क्या कार्य दिया है। उन्होंने बताया और कहा की हम उसे  करवा कर थोड़ी देर में फ़ोटो भेज देंगे और उनकी माँ ने भेजा भी । जिन बच्चों के पास एंड्रॉयड  मोबाइल नहीं हैं वो कॉल में या अपने अभिभावक को अपना किए गए कार्य को सुनाते हैं । बच्चे को इस माध्यम से पढ़ना काफी अच्छा लग रहा है , वो समय पर अच्छे - अच्छे  चित्र , कहानी अपने स्तर के कार्य कर के भेज रहे हैं  । आज  जब बच्चों का कार्य  पूरा हो गया था तो एक छात्रा बोल रही थी कि दीदी मुझे और टास्क चाहिए, बताइये न और क्या - क्या करना है । मुझे ये सब देखकर काफी खुशी हो रही थी । 

गुलमेहर , शहनाज़ , किरण और साक्षी और हमारे सभी edu - leaders ने जो कार्य शुरू किया है और इतनी लगन  और मेहनत से कर रहे हैं, यह सच में काबिले तारीफ है । आप का इस समाज में कहीं न कहीं बहुत बड़ा  योगदान है  की आप इस विकट स्थिति में एक समस्या का समाधान निकाल पाए ।

“दोस्तों अगर कुछ करने की ठान लो तो आपको कोई नहीं रोक सकता

क्योंकि प्रयास और कठिन परिश्रम पर ही हमारी जीत कायम होती है ।

परेशानी कुछ भी आए अगर हम उसके आगे घुटने नहीं टेकें

और दृढ़ निश्चय कर पूरे निष्ठा भाव के साथ आगे बढ़े तो क्या नहीं हो सकता ।“

Sonam- A Story of Determination and Discipline

"Age is just a number, in order to achieve your goals, you need to be disciplined and work harder." - Sonam

Sonam Bharti

Sonam, a 20-year-old lives in Daniyalpur village, Dharhara, Munger with her mother, three siblings, and a dream: a dream to educate others. Her father works in Bangalore to earn for the family. She is punctual, zestful, sincere but besides all of that she is disciplined. Her primary education was in a Middle School, Govindpuram Jharkhand, till 8th std. She had to shift to another school named, AadarshBalika Secondary School, Dharahara for her secondary education. As there was no school nearby for Higher secondary education, so she shifted to her maternal grandmother's home and got admission in a school there only. Today, Sonam is pursuing a Diploma in Education (D Ed.) from Sri Krishna ManoramaShikshakPrashikshanMahavidyalaya, Banka, Bihar.

She loves to learn new things and teach others about it. At a very early age (i.e., when she was in 4th std.) she started teaching her younger siblings and other children nearby along with her studies. Being diligent since her childhood, she started building efforts to attain what she wants. The only dream she has is to be a teacher - she wants to teach those who can't afford education or where there is a lack of resources & awareness. Sonam wants to provide all the support required for such children to meet their educational needs. But she is also aware of the fact that educating children only is not enough. For a better-educated society the teachers need to be well trained as well. She dreams to work on training teachers in such under-resourced regions for children to become better educated. 

Her hard work and efforts reflect her ardency of becoming a teacher, as she started her 3 months teacher training with i-Saksham when she was in 11th standard. Despite the training venue being 7 km. away from her residence, she never missed any session. She knew that this training is the first step towards reaching her dream of being an educator. She progressed well in the training and when i-Saksham started its fellowship program of 2 years in the year 2017, Sonam made through it. 

As a part of her fellowship. she started teaching at Primary School, Daniyalpur (her own village) for 2 hours/day to practice her learning. Teaching through action, using teaching and learning materials, and all the other innovations in education; she experimented with everything that was being taught to her in her fellowship training. It was year 2017 when her community saw a completely different mode of teaching for the first time and was amazed at the way their children have started showing interest in learning.

Not just the alphabets and numbers, Sonam wanted children of her village to be the better citizens of tomorrow. She progressively worked towards the holistic development of her students. From spreading awareness about health and hygiene, introducing good day-to-day habits to making children spread awareness in the community about the same, Sonam gave her every possible effort.  Today, we can acknowledge positive behavioral changes in children of her village by the way they are showing interest towards education and keeping their surroundings clean. The place she has made in the heart of people in her community was seen when one of the parent said- "We can't imagine the education of our children without Sonam".

  "Whenever she looks at her students and the changes, she has brought in them, she feels really happy and proud of herself," she said. "This fellowship program helped her to build her confidence and to put her views in front of others without being hesitant. She enjoyed her journey with i-Saksham" she added. 

Sonam is today a part of i-Saksham team and facilitates training of i-Saksham fellows coming from different villages. With herself being a part of the fellowship from 2017 to 2019, Sonam is leading the fellowship training really well. She is aware of the challenges a fellow faces during the fellowship and thus is a go-to person for a lot of fellows at i-Saksham.

Besides teaching and learning, Sonam loves to draw, do crafts, and write poems too. Sonam is today and inspiration and a role model for so many other girls in her community who are skeptical about taking the very first step towards their dreams. As Sonam stood up for her dreams, a few more girls from her community joined i-Saksham fellowship program and are today working hard for their dreams. Sangeeta, a neighbour of Sonam is today a part of i-Saksham fellowship and is teaching in the same school where Sonam taught during her fellowship. Inspired by Sonam and her work, Sangeeta is experimenting with her creativity every single day to create a better learning space for children in her society. 

We need more such youth in the society who can stand up for their dreams and community to make it a better place. Here are some words for all girls like Sonam-

“Just like the stars, I belong to that sky

I have also dreamed of flying high

Odds can suffer me, I won't let my dreams die

Dreams don't come true with a blink of eye

You need to focus, work hard & try

People keep asking me -"I’m doing this why?"

Because I know one day,I'll fly high

I know one day I'll reach that sky...”
